The Syrian Ministry of Education has decided to include the Russian language in the curriculum as of the upcoming scholastic year in addition to the English language. Students will get to choose between French and Russian as a second foreign language.

Syrian Ministry of Education mentioned on its official website that: “we have taken the decision of giving the student in the 7th grade to choose a second foreign language between Russian and French”.

“As the upcoming scholastic year begins, the Ministry will finish the necessary preparations to teach Russian in a number of schools starting with the curriculum and the necessary teachers” mentioned the minister of Education Hawazen Alwaz.

Syrian schools teach English as well as Arabic which is the country’s official language from the first grade. French is taught as of the 7th grade.

Moscow is the main ally of Al Assad’s regime as it used its “Veto” right in the Security Council to prevent a resolution that would condemn the regime’s actions in the conflict taking place in Syria for 33 months.
