Countdown to the 24-hour tube begins with photography show at Westminster station

It’s six months to go until the fabled ‘Night Tube’ launches, and what better way to celebrate than with an epic Underground art exhibition.

Come September 12, the tube will be opening its carriage doors to late-night workers and early morning ravers alike with its extended all-night weekend services. It’s a pretty big deal (say farewell to extortionate taxi fares and hello to a rejuvenated social life!) so in order to start the countdown and build the hype TfL has organised a series of events entitled ‘Firsts for the Tube’.

First up is the ‘Free the Night’ exhibition, a collection of 24 striking images from some of the world’s best photographers. Work from the likes of Sam Taylor Johnson OBE, Nick Knight OBE, Corinne Day, Sir Cecil Beaton, Juergen Teller, and Rankin is now on display at London’s favourite Underground station – Westminster.

Some of the photographs are a whopping 9 x 6 foot in size and are on display in the station’s alcoves.

Keep an eye out for a 1920s ballroom dance by Sir Cecil Beaton, a snap of a tube worker on his way home taken by the fabulous British fashion and portrait photographer Rankin, and Bruce Springsteen papped outside Hammersmith Odeon by Chalkie Davies in 1979.

George Annin of the Annin Arts Gallery, which partnered with TfL to produce the gallery, said: ‘Each photograph captures a different idea of the concept of “Free the Night”‘.

So go take a look, get inspired by the night-time city scenes and get giddy that there’s only six months left until we get to party hard and snuggle up on a nice warm tube train on our way home.
